Research Assistant in Intelligent Systems
The Cardiff School of Technologies at Cardiff Metropolitan University is seeking to appoint a Research Assistant to support an innovative research project focused on intelligent sensing and AI-enabled technologies for improving hygiene practices and food safety monitoring. The project explores the development and testing of sensor-based systems capable of analysing behavioural and environmental data to support safer practices in food preparation and manufacturing environments.
Working within a multidisciplinary research team, the postholder will contribute to the design, development, and evaluation of intelligent technology solutions, including embedded systems, sensor networks, and machine vision tools. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to applied research that integrates artificial intelligence, hardware systems, and behavioural analysis to address real-world public health and food safety challenges.
You’ll play a key role in:
- Supporting the development and testing of intelligent sensing systems and experimental prototypes.
- Assisting with research activities involving embedded devices, sensors, and data acquisition systems.
- Contributing to the application of artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques for analysing behavioural and environmental data.
- Supporting experimental trials and system evaluation in laboratory and applied research settings.
- Assisting with literature reviews, data analysis, and research reporting.
- Contributing to the dissemination of research findings through reports, publications, and presentations.
What You'll Bring:
You will have a strong interest in applied research involving intelligent technologies and data-driven systems. You will be comfortable working with both hardware and software components and contributing to experimental research activities within a collaborative academic environment.
In particular, you will bring:
- A good honours degree (2:1 or above) in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Knowledge of intelligent sensing technologies, embedded systems, or IoT devices.
- Familiarity with programming and working with modern hardware platforms such as GPU-enabled boards (e.g. NVIDIA Jetson) or similar embedded computing platforms, including integration with sensors or intelligent devices for data acquisition and system testing.
- An understanding of artificial intelligence, machine learning, or machine vision techniques relevant to sensor-based or camera-based monitoring systems and data analysis.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to support experimental research and data interpretation.
- Excellent communication and organisational skills, with the ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary research team.
